Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology of Busan Paik Hospital is organized with 7 professors, 8 ophthalmology residents, 7 outpatient nurses, 2 nurses specializing in examinations, and 1 optician. The number of outpatients is exceeding 40,000 and it has operated more than 3,000 surgeries per year, playing its role as a university hospital and completing its missions. The hospital has worked hard for research activities such as academic presentations and publications of theses and books as well as patent applications. The hospital had dozens of dissertations registered including 8 domestic thesis and 18 overseas thesis (SCI level included).

Introduction of advanced test equipment (Cirrus HD OCT, fluorescein angiography, indocyanineangiography device, electroretinography, visual evoked potential, cornea endotheliumtester, Scheimpflug camera, IOL master, Humphreyfield analyzer, etc.) and treatment devices (Pascal(argon) laser, YAG laser, vitrectomy (Accurus, Steralis PC), cataract surgery equipment) promotes the healthiest optical conditions of patients through advanced treatment and therapies.

Busan Paik Hospital was designated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare as ‘2012 Support Program for Research Centers for Hospital Specialization’ with financial support worth approximately 11 billion Korean won for a 5-year term through which the hospital works to establish systematic infrastructure for curing ophthalmology angiogenetic diseases (Cornea angiogenetic diseases, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, etc.) and develop new medicine and medical materials with new paradigms.

Ophthalmic plastic surgery clinic

It aims to improve optical functions in consideration of not only the aesthetical but also functional properties of eyes. It conducts assessments of visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, slit lamp microscope assessment, oculomotor examination, exophthalmometer examination, computed tomography, and blood tests after close counseling with ophthalmic plastic surgeons.

Target diseases include ptosis, other palpebral diseases, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, orbit and eyelid tumors, thyroid associated ophthalmopathy, injuries around the eyes like orbital wall fractures, bulbar atrophy and artificial eye surgeries for anophthalmia patients.

Botox clinic

Botox can be injected up to as many as 5 or 6 spots on muscular parts that involve wrinkles and blepharospasm, and the duration of the therapy takes about 10 to 20 minutes.

Target diseases are hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, spasmodic torticollis, dystonia, etc.

Diabetic retinopathy clinic

About 50% of diabetic patients suffer from diabetic retinopathy due to ocular complications which can be a major cause of blindness among adults. When diagnosed with diabetes, therefore, regular vision screening is essential even if there are no ophthalmologic symptoms.

With close counseling with retina specialists, it conducts various examinations including an assessment of visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, fundus examination, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ocular ultrasonography, and optical coherence tomography, and provides appropriate treatment such as laser photocoagulation, intravitreal injections, and vitrectomy.

Macular degeneration clinic

Macular degeneration refers to the degenerative disease mainly for those above the age of 50 involving plaque called drusen on the macular and retinitis pigmentosa. Its prevalence rate sharply increases as age increases. If it progresses into the late phase, it can cause severe amblyopia due to contraction of central part of macular or bleeding or edema caused by choroidal neovascularization. Aging or smoking can be risk factors and those who are at the age of 50 and above with symptoms of low vision and metamorphopsia are subject to examination.

With counseling with retina specialists, it conducts various examinations including assessments of visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, fundus examination, fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, ocular ultrasonography, and optical coherence tomography, and provides appropriate treatment such as intravitreal injections, laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy, vitrectomy, and improvement of life habits.

Uveitis clinic

Target patients are those who suffer from eye pain, hyperemia, decreased visual acuity, and so on. Intrinsic/idiopathic uveitis by autoimmunity can be treated with steroid instillation and oral preparation for controlling inflammation. In case of chronic diseases with no reaction to steroids or a high recurrence rate, immunosuppressive drugs should be administered.

Glaucoma clinic

Along with counseling with a glaucoma specialist, various examinations such as an assessment of visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement, slit lamp microscope assessment, fundus examination, fundus photography, automated perimetry, computed optic disc analysis, and optical coherence tomography. The primary treatment can be drug therapies to lower intraocular pressure. Laser therapies can be conducted in the phase prior to surgery when drug therapies do not help lower intraocular pressure or eyesight gets worse, even though intraocular pressure is under control. Surgical therapies include trabeculectomy, which creates aqueous outflow routes, or implant surgery.

Pediatric ophthalmology clinic

This treats all kinds of ophthalmologic diseases for children, such as retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus, amblyopia, ophthalmodonesis, paralytic strabismus due to various diseases or injuries, and specific types of amblyopia. Along with counseling with a pediatric ophthalmologic specialist, various examinations such as an assessment of visual acuity, oculomotor examination, reflection inspection, slit lamp microscope assessment, alternate cover test, stereoacuity test, and fundus examination. There are specific treatments for individual diagnosis like pleoptics, wearing glasses, prism therapy, and surgeries.

Corneal transplant clinic

After counseling with a corneal specialist, several tests such as an assessment of visual acuity, slit lamp microscope assessment, intraocular pressure measurement, reflection inspection, fundus examination, ultrasound test, electroretinography, and visual evoked potential test. Treatments like penetrating keratoplasty, lamellar corneal transplantation, limbal transplantation, and artificial cornea transplantation can be conducted.
